Occasionally, this Daylily variety has extra floral segments beyond the normal 6, a
condition known as
polytepaly
( pah-lee-TEH-puh-lee, poly 'many',
tepal 'corolla segment' ). Several times each year
we have seen a bud open into 8 segments, and sometimes a flower appears with 10
segments. The flower shown here has 12 segments, an extreme rarity. Daylily hybridizers are very excited about the possibility of creating new polytepalous varieties. So far, a few Daylily varieties have been found which have some polytepalous flowers, even though the majority of flowers on the same plant have the normal 6 segments. |
