__________________________ More about the farm |

Holcomb Farm CSA
grows 24 acres of vegetables on 30 acres of cropland
for 500 CSA summer shares, 3-10 bulk subsidized shares for social
service agencies, and a few restaurants. In 2010, we are adding a flock
of 150 laying hens, raising 10 feeder pigs and piloting a small winter
CSA. We began in 1993 as a program of the Hartford Food System, a small
non-profit organization that works on community food security issues in
Hartford. We recently spun off from HFS and merged with our neighbors at
the Holcomb Farm Learning Center to form one non-profit organization
that manages the 360-acre property owned by the Town of Granby. The
Learning Center conducts farm and nature based educational programs for
a variety of groups and hosts an extensive calendar of community events
and programs.
We farm on 8 scattered fields, all of which are sandy loams, one of which has a permanent deer fence around its 9 acres. We use 5 tractors and a variety of implements for tillage and cultivation. We pump water from two large streams to feed a combination of drip irrigation, solidset sprinklers, and an irrigation traveler. We have two full-time farm managers, two seasonal apprentices, a few part-timers, and a number of CSA workshare members and dedicated volunteers. All of our CSA members pick up their shares at the farm and we offer an extensive pick-your-own crop selection included in the shares. We utilize a range of green manures, mulches, and mineral and plant-based fertilizers for soil building. Our new hen operation is designed in part to create a supply of compost for the farm.
